Summary: Firstly, this report studies the role that the public sector should have with respect to cultural activities. More precisely, it emphasises which are the theoretical reasons behind providing cultural activities at the local level. Secondly, the report provides a descriptive analysis of the cultural local public spending, analysing the weight that different local entities have on cultural expenditure and the composition and evolution of this expenditure throughout the period 2003-2014. Finally, the study analyses which are the determinants of cultural local public spending using an econometric approach.
